We who have been blessed with abundance in security, resources, skills, and faith must continue to seek ways of reaching out to those ‘on the periphery,’ in hope and service.

– Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB

Intense consumerism events like “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” keep us distracted from what really matters. Giving Tuesday offers an alternative to buying things by encouraging us to use our material blessings for the benefit of others less fortunate.

This year, we aim to raise funds on Giving Tuesday and throughout the month of December to support our daily free lunch program. With a decrease of food donations from the Greater Vancouver Food Bank we’ve had to purchase 30% of the food we serve. We want to continue to provide up to 250 guests a day with a meal. This allows us to reach out to those in need that live in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, a neighbourhood recognized as the poorest urban population in the whole of Canada.

Through your support, The Door Is Open will be able to provide healthy meals to more people in our daily lunch service, offer counselling, shelter services and referrals, clothing and food, information, support and awareness. In an area of systemic poverty and addiction, The Door Is Open is a place where lives get turned around. It starts with a hot meal and the sense of belonging.

To help us serve a person in need, you can visit our donation page, spread the word, and share our story with your friends and family. Please tag us @thedoorisopen1 on Facebook and @thedoorisopen on Instagram with #GivingTuesday so we can share your stories too!

Your help matters. It ensures that everyone who comes to The Door Is Open is served a healthy meal in a safe and welcoming environment and that’s the most important part of our work. Practicing generosity is a great virtue of Christian stewardship because it blesses others and affirms our faith in God who is never outdone in generosity.
