When the president of a New Westminster-based insurance company was getting ready to celebrate his birthday this year, he decided to do something special.
Amante Jotie of AJ Insurance Services would raise funds for the homeless.
Jotie “always wanted to link his birthday celebration with a charitable cause,” said his marketing associate, Eisa Cala. A sales manager suggested The Door is Open, the drop-in centre that serves at least one free meal a day and runs several programs for people living in Vancouver’s poorest neighbourhood, the Downtown Eastside.
“After seeing DIO’s mission for the unfortunate, a desire to feed the poor and provide shelter for the homeless, AJ Insurance decided that it would be the perfect recipient.”
The company donated $14,500 to the centre, not including the proceeds of a 50/50 raffle and live auction, at Jotie’s birthday party July 6. DIO staff including Sister Chita Torres and Frances Cabahug were there to receive the gift.
